Spain golf holidays - Empordà Golf Forest Course

Empordà Golf Forest Course Gualta, Catalonia

Empordà Forest was conceived in 1988 by Robert von Hagge, his first design in Spain, laid out through pine woodland a few kilometres from Girona as one half of the Empordà Golf resort. It's the more intimate and sheltered of the resort's two courses, tucked away from the wind that defines its sister Dunes course next door. The course plays to a par of 72 over roughly 6,165 metres, narrower and more wooded than a typical von Hagge layout, with elevated greens well defended by bunkers rather than by length. It rewards strategic, thoughtful play over raw power: water comes into it modestly, most notably around the 6th, and the short par-five 9th is the hole to plan around rather than simply attack. Pine scent and shelter from the Empordà wind make this a genuinely different round from the exposed, links-style Dunes course sharing the estate. Facilities include a driving range, academy and full practice greens, plus an on-site hotel for anyone staying to play both courses back to back. Book Empordà Forest for the more technical, sheltered half of the resort, and pair it with the Dunes course for a proper contrast in styles on the same trip. (...)

Spain golf holidays - Empordà Golf Dunes Course

Empordà Golf Dunes Course Gualta, Catalonia

Empordà Dunes began in 1989, when a group of local enthusiasts bought 125 hectares near Girona and brought in the Texan architect Robert von Hagge to design it from scratch. The first nine holes opened within two years, and von Hagge returned in 2004 to add a further nine, completing the eighteen-hole links course that exists today. This is the exposed, wind-exposed half of the Empordà resort, built through dunes and lakes rather than the pine forest that shelters its sister Forest course. Fairways run wide and the greens are large and fast, but water threatens repeatedly and the wind off the Empordà plain adds a genuine variable most Costa Brava courses don't have to offer. The course was the permanent home of the European Tour's PGA Pre-Qualifying School from 1993 to 2006, a run few Spanish courses can match. The signature 18th closes the round in style, the green wrapped by a lake and running to some 300 square metres. Facilities include a driving range, academy and full practice greens, with an on-site hotel for a proper two-course stay. Book Empordà Dunes for a genuine links test, and pair it with the sheltered Forest course next door for real contrast across one trip. (...)
