Izki Urturi Golf Course lies deep in the Izki Nature Park in Álava, in the Basque Country's mountain interior, within easy reach of the La Rioja wine region and Logroño. Sitting at around 700 to 800 metres of elevation, it's a course built for golfers who want scenery and seriousness in equal measure.
Severiano Ballesteros laid this one out in 1994, and his instinct for working with the land rather than against it shows in every hole. Wide, open fairways run between oak, beech and holly, giving the course room to breathe without ever feeling easy: the terrain and the tree lines demand real course management from tee to green. It's a layout that has stood up to serious competitive golf over the decades and still rewards the everyday visitor just as well.
A driving range, practice greens and a golf academy sit alongside the course, with locker rooms on hand for a proper changeover before or after the round. For golfers looking to combine a genuinely Seve-designed test with the mountains and vineyards of northern Spain, this is well worth building a day around.
