La Herreria Golf Course
La Herreria Golf Course has been played since 1966, laid out by Antonio Lucena Gómez in the Royal Site of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984 and still protected National Heritage land. José Gancedo reworked the front nine around the turn of the millennium, redesigning tees, greens, and bunkers while deliberately keeping the native oak, ash, and holm oak forest the holes run through intact.
The result plays in two distinct halves. The front nine winds through genuine woodland, tight and shaded, with water brought into play on three early holes. The back nine opens out into wider, more exposed terrain, ringed by the peaks of Abantos, San Benito, and Las Machotas, with the Monastery of El Escorial visible from parts of the round. The surrounding mountains create a sheltered microclimate that softens the Sierra de Guadarrama's harsher weather, making this a course that plays comfortably across more of the calendar than its altitude might suggest. Par 71 keeps the test honest rather than punishing.
Facilities include a driving range, academy, and locker rooms, all set within one of the more storied corners of golf near Madrid. Few rounds anywhere in Spain come with a monastery for scenery — book ahead and see why this one has lasted sixty years.
