Spain golf holidays - Fairplay Golf Course

Fairplay Golf Course Benalup-Casas Viejas, Andalusia

Fairplay Golf Course sits deep in the Cádiz countryside near Benalup-Casas Viejas, with views over the La Janda valley and the wooded slopes of the Los Alcornocales natural park. Designed by Baron Paul Rolin and opened in 2001, the course was remodelled and reopened in 2017, giving it a layout that plays with a maturity well beyond its years. This par-73 test is a rare find on the coast: five par 5s, generous length, and large, undulating greens that reward precision as much as power. Lakes run through the round and shape the strategy on hole after hole, while mature trees frame the fairways and dictate the line into the green. The par-3 10th, with its open view across the whole valley, is one to remember, and low handicappers playing from the back tees will find plenty here to test them. The course sits within the Fairplay Golf & Spa Resort, giving golfers access to a driving range, putting green, locker room and a resident pro, along with the resort's wider spa and dining facilities for the rest of the day. For golfers after a proper technical challenge in unspoilt surroundings, this is well worth building a round around. (...)

Spain golf holidays - La Estancia Golf Course

La Estancia Golf Course Chiclana de la Frontera, Andalusia

La Estancia sits just 2.7 kilometres from La Barrosa beach in Chiclana de la Frontera, designed by the Dutch architect Alan Rijks, his first course in Spain. Opened in 2004 as Meliá Sancti Petri, the course changed hands in 2009 and underwent a significant reinvestment in 2014, re-emerging as La Estancia and establishing itself as one of the more distinctive courses in the area. The layout genuinely evokes traditional links golf, in the spirit of courses like St Andrews: flat, easy to walk, and set among newly planted and centuries-old olive trees, holm oaks and pines. Four brooks and three lakes come into play across the round, most notably guarding the green at the 9th, but it's the prevailing sea breeze that does the real work here, shaping club selection hole after hole in a way few other courses on this stretch of coast can match. More than 25 species of birds share the course with golfers, adding a genuinely natural feel to the round. The clubhouse, driving range and full practice facilities are all well regarded, and the restaurant has drawn particular praise from recent visitors. For golfers who want a proper wind-driven, links-style test close to the beach, this is one worth building a round around. (...)

Spain golf holidays - Montecastillo

Montecastillo Jerez de la Frontera, Andalusia

Montecastillo sits in the sherry-producing hills outside Jerez de la Frontera, a Jack Nicklaus design whose 1994 inauguration saw Nicklaus himself take to the course alongside his sons. It went on to host the European Tour's Volvo Masters for five consecutive years from 1997, taking over hosting duties from Valderrama, before further stints with the Peugeot Tour of Spain and the 2009 Barceló PGA Tour of Spain. Few courses on the Costa de la Luz can match that pedigree. The layout is vintage Nicklaus: bold bunkering, large fast greens, and water guarding several key approaches, including the closing par-4 17th and 18th. Elevated tees and a dramatic downhill closing hole make the most of the rolling terrain, with several genuinely memorable views back over the resort and the surrounding hills. It's a proper test, best suited to golfers who enjoy length and a bit of theatre in their round, and buggies are worth having for the longer green-to-tee walks. Montecastillo is a private club, with advance booking required for visitors. This is a course to book for the history and the design as much as the round itself, one of the genuine championship venues within easy reach of the coast. (...)
