Laukariz Golf Course sits on a roughly 70-hectare estate in Mungia, fifteen minutes from Bilbao and just ten from Loiu airport. Known locally as ''La Bilbaína,'' this private country club offers a genuinely rare thing for the region: 27 holes across three homologated 9-hole loops, giving members and visiting golfers three distinct ways to build an 18-hole round.
Robert Putman, the American architect behind the North and South courses at La Manga Club, designed the original 18 holes in 1975, working across genuinely hilly terrain that still challenges golfers today. Stirling & Martin added a further nine in 2005, extending the course without softening its character. The estate itself has a botanical-garden feel, with an exceptional variety of tree species lining wide, undulating fairways. The 1st, a striking downhill par 5 with real danger out of bounds, and the closing uphill par 5 18th are among the standout holes.
A driving range, locker rooms and putting green are on site, alongside the club's wider sporting and social facilities. As a private members' club, visitor access is available on request; get in touch and we'll arrange the details. For golfers who want a genuinely substantial, physically demanding round with real design pedigree, Laukariz is well worth the visit.
