Villarias Golf Course sits in the Merindades region of northern Burgos, built around the 17th-century Casa Palacio del Marqués de Villarías, with the 12th-century Romanesque church of San Cristóbal de Villarías standing nearby. At roughly 600 metres of altitude, the setting is genuinely striking, and rare for a course this size.
Manuel Piñero designed the nine-hole, par 36 course, opening it in 1996. Three lakes, covering 10,000 square metres, come into play across holes 1, 3, 4 and 9, while tree-lined fairways run throughout. An effective drainage system keeps the course playable all year round, whatever the Burgos weather brings.
A genuinely large practice range, wide enough for 18 golfers to hit simultaneously, sits alongside a driving range, golf academy, locker rooms and putting green. For golfers looking for a relaxed, historically rich round away from the more crowded coastal courses, Villarias is well worth the detour into northern Burgos.
