Zuia Golf Club sits at the foot of Mount Gorbea within the Gorbea Natural Park, dominating the Urkabustaiz and Zuia valleys in a setting of genuinely striking natural beauty. Its story is as grounded as its location: the club grew out of a Murguía tennis club whose members took up golf together in the 1970s, before securing disused former quarry land in Altube in 1988 and building the course themselves, planting trees, clearing stones and setting the first sprinklers by hand.
Álvaro Arana, nephew of celebrated Spanish course architect Javier Arana, designed the course, opening it in 1990. The nine holes run flat and true across 17 hectares, framed by oak, pine and beech woodland, with natural lakes adding just enough difficulty to keep the round interesting without ever feeling severe. Played twice for a full 18, the course covers 5,606 metres in total.
A driving range, golf academy, locker rooms and putting green are all on site, alongside a restaurant open daily. For golfers who want a genuinely welcoming, community-built course in one of the Basque Country's most naturally beautiful settings, Zuia is well worth the visit.
