Spain golf holidays - El Rompido South

El Rompido South Cartaya, Andalusia

El Rompido South sits within the same Río Piedras estate as its sister course, on the Costa de la Luz outside Cartaya, and was the original of the resort's two layouts, designed by Álvaro Arana and opened in October 2003. It's a walkable, technical course, with an unusual variety of doglegs shaped by the land itself and the surrounding pine and native flora, so no two holes play alike. The front nine sits on higher ground, while the back nine moves down into the protected saltmarsh nearer the sea, where a stronger breeze and more water come into play. Guests who've played both courses often rate South as the tougher, more varied test of the two, and the spacious, subtly contoured greens reward accurate, well-placed approaches over raw distance. Pine trees and water hazards throughout demand precision from tee to green. The clubhouse is modest but well-run, with a restaurant looking out over the 18th green and a terrace worth lingering on afterwards, and the practice facilities, buggies and trolleys are all handled at fair rates. For a technical, varied round with a proper sense of place, this is the one worth building your Costa de la Luz trip around.  (...)

Spain golf holidays - El Rompido North

El Rompido North Cartaya, Andalusia

El Rompido North sits within the protected marshlands of the Río Piedras, on the Costa de la Luz outside Cartaya, threading its way through pine trees and orange groves within sight of the Atlantic. Designed by Álvaro Arana and opened in June 2006, the course has since been named among Europe's top 100 by Top 100 Golf Courses, and the Peugeot Guide has praised it as a modern, thoughtful design that rewards good strategy over raw power. The layout is flat and comfortably walkable, with long, wide fairways giving golfers of every handicap room to work with, while the medium-sized, quick-running greens keep the scoring honest. Set with no buildings in sight from the fairways, the course leans fully into its wetland surroundings, offering a genuinely natural round rarely found this close to the coast. It's a course that asks you to think through your options rather than simply overpower it. The wider El Rompido complex includes practice areas and clubs for hire, and the resort's second course, South, sits alongside it for those wanting a full two-round break. Between the setting, the pedigree and the recent European recognition, this is one worth building a Costa de la Luz trip around. (...)

Spain golf holidays - Nuevo Portil Golf

Nuevo Portil Golf Cartaya, Andalusia

Nuevo Portil sits on the Huelva coast near Cartaya, close to the Marismas del Piedras and Flecha del Rompido natural park. Designed by Alfonso Vidaor and opened in 2001, the course spreads across 46 hectares of gently rolling, pine-lined parkland, easy walking with wide fairways and soft, welcoming greens. It's a course built for a relaxed, enjoyable round rather than a brutal test: dogleg after dogleg among mature pines, with the odd water hazard adding just enough interest without ever feeling severe. The natural park setting gives it a genuinely pleasant, unhurried backdrop, and the course has built a reputation over the years for staying in consistently good condition. The clubhouse and practice facilities round things out nicely for a full day at the course. For golfers who want an approachable, well-maintained round in a quiet natural setting rather than a championship-style challenge, this is well worth booking. (...)
