La Coruña Golf Course

La Coruña Golf Course is the oldest 18-hole course in Galicia, founded in 1961 by a group of friends who first discussed the idea at the local yacht club before settling on a site in the hills of La Zapateira. Philip Mackenzie Ross designed the course, the same architect behind Turnberry's Ailsa Course and Spain's first-ever golf course.

Wide fairways run between established, mature trees, giving the round a settled, parkland character rare in a course this close to a city. Several holes bring lakes into direct play in front of the green, and the short par-3 opener, known locally as ''The Pyramid,'' sets an unusual tone from the very first tee. It's a course that rewards accuracy over length, on ground that rolls more than it first appears.

Visitors are genuinely welcome here, though advance booking is essential, particularly at weekends and on holidays, and a valid handicap certificate is required.
