Madera III Golf Course, also known as El Tragamón, sits in the semi-rural parish of Castiello de Bernueces, close to Gijón. It began life in 1989, growing directly out of junior golf courses run by the city's sports authority to build local interest in the game, and it remains one of the two municipal courses built specifically for that purpose.
The nine-hole, par 68 layout follows the winding course of the Río Peñafrancia, which threads through the round and adds a genuine natural hazard framed by riverside vegetation. The par-4 2nd and par-5 6th stand out as the course's strongest holes, and the mix of hole lengths gives newer players a proper, varied introduction to the game rather than a simplified short course.
A driving range and putting green round out the facilities. Genuinely approachable and built with beginners in mind, Madera III is a relaxed, welcoming round close to Gijón, ideal for golfers easing into the game or looking for a shorter round to fit into a busy day.
